History and Heritage

In 1873 -

In 1873, the Brand Name and Trade Mark of Morgan's Pomade were first registered at Stationer's Hall in London.

This new Brand was a special preparation of high quality hair dressing ingredients which gradually darkened the hair as well as providing impeccable grooming for the fashion conscious.



Over a century ago, our family company was founded by Robert Martin who recognized the importance of the virtually worldwide desire to delay the onset of grey hair. This desire affects and influences both men and women equally and, in Morgan's Original Hair Darkening Pomade, the combination of the gradual and discreet darkening of the hair with the ability to keep well groomed was too good to resist.



Those who tried this remarkable product quickly discovered how effective it was and awareness rapidly spread as Morgan's Pomade was stocked and recommended by the leading gentlemen's barbers of London's fashionable West End.



In the beginning, manufacturing was carried out in the family kitchen by Robert himself who packaged, labelled and distributed the Pomade to local businesses. Word continued to spread about this excellent product and demand grew making it necessary to move to a small local factory in Highgate, north of London. News of Morgan's also spread across the English Channel to Europe and soon it was being supplied to exclusive hairdressers in Paris and other capitals.



In 1914 -

In 1914 the Great War intervened, causing a shortage in raw materials which affected production of Morgan's Sales suffered greatly during this period of uncertainty and, in 1917, Robert died leaving the business to his wife, Jane Dinah, and four of his sons. Jane assumed control and, working hard to make up for the lost ground caused by the war, succeeded in bringing the business back to somewhere near its pre-war strength.



The period between the wars was an era of uninterrupted growth for Morgan's as the Brand awareness continued to expand across the world. Form Mayfair to Madras, Morgan's influence and reputation continued to grow as people enjoyed the benefits of excellent hair care and control of grey. This was the classic age of Hollywood and the development of the cinema stimulated interest if fashion and hair care and Morgan's Pomade was known and used by many of the big names in entertainment supporting their always suave, well groomed appearance.



In 1939 -

In 1939, as in 1914, war again intervened causing many production and distribution problems. Again the Company survived the period of conflict and, post war, re-started its export drives with Africa and the Caribbean becoming very strong markets, Morgan's is today still a household name in many African/Caribbean households as well as the Brand being well known in European, Asian and American market places. In partnership with a global network of distribution agents, Morgan's is now delivered to more than 50 export markets worldwide and the number continues to grow.





From one man and a kitchen sink, Morgan's has grown into a structured, forward looking business now with a manufacturing facility in Whitstable, England, producing a whole range of fine quality hair and skin care products. The Company is still independently owned, with a member of the Martin family still retaining a controlling interest in the business ensuring that the Company founded by Robert Martin so many years before, remains true to the same principles of quality, integrity and value that had made his Original Pomade so successful.
