Katak-katak Papua Belum Punya "Nama"

Sebanyak 134 spesies katak baru ditemukan dalam penelitian sejak tahun 1998-2008 di Papua dan Papua Niugini. Penemuan itu memantapkan posisi wilayah tersebut sebagai tempat dengan keanekaragaman katak tertinggi setelah Madagaskar.


Salah satu jenis katak yang ditemukan adalah Litoria sauroni berdasarkan nama Sauron di Lord of the Ring karena kemiripannya. Katak itu punya mata merah berbintik hitam dan pejantannya suka memanggil betina pada malam hari dari cabang pepohonan.


Jenis katak lain dari genus yang sama juga ditemukan, yakni Litoria spartacus, Litoria bibonius, dan Litoria dux. Spesies terakhir dinamai berdasarkan bahasa latin "dux" yang berarti pemimpin. Sebab, katak tersebut memiliki warna yang cerah dan atraktif.


Di antara ratusan katak yang ditemukan, katak berbisa yang ditemukan di Gunung Bosavi adalah yang paling menarik. Sementara spesies lainnya yang tak kalah unik adalah Oreophryne minuta yang ditemukan pada tahun 2000 dan hanya memiliki panjang 1 cm.


Semua jenis katak yang ditemukan di Papua dan Papua Niugini terangkum dalam laporan WWF yang terbit tahun ini. Selain spesies di atas, ada pula Albericus sanguinopictus, Choerophryne longirostris, Austrochaperina blumi, dan Cophixalus variabilis.


Banyak dari katak yang telah ditemukan ternyata belum dideskripsikan. Dari 150 amfibi dan reptilia yang disimpan di Bishop Museum yang belum dideskripsikan, lebih dari 100 di antaranya adalah katak. Tentunya ini sebuah kesempatan buat para ilmuwan untuk berperan.

wah parah juga ya, kalo emang sampe skrg blm ada nama atau ga proses nomenklatur nya..
paling ga sdh ada tuh identitas genus mana tuh katak...
