VIVAnews - Atraksi 'Volador de Papantla' atau 'Manusia terbang dari Papantla' beraksi di Chapultepec Park, Mexico City, Rabu 15 Juni 2011. Dalam atraksi ini, kaki para pemain diikat dalam tali pada sebuah tiang dengan posisi kepala berada di bawah.


Badan PBB untuk Pendidikan, Ilmu Pengetahuan, dan Kebudayaan (UNESCO) telah menetapkan 'Voladores de Papantla' atau sebagai warisan dunia pada 30 September 2009 yang lalu. Papantla adalah sebuah kota yang terletak di negara bagian Veracruz di Meksiko timur.



Atraksi ini berasal dari ritual yang dilakukan masyarakat Amerika Tengah pada zaman pre-Hispanik. Diyakini, tarian ini berasal dari peradaban orang-orang Nahua, Huastec, dan Otomi yang hidup di Meksiko tengah. Tarian ini kemudian menyebar ke wilayah Mesoamerika.


Ritual ini terdiri dari menari dan memanjat tiang setinggi 30 meter. Dimainkan oleh lima orang. Satu orang diikat kakinya untuk turun ke bawah, dan empat orang lainnya memainkan seruling dan drum. Menurut mitos, ritual ini diciptakan untuk meminta para dewa mengakhiri kekeringan parah yang melanda.
