Layanan video chatting, voice calling, dan instant messaging Skype SA kembali normal pada Kamis, (24/12) setelah mengalami masalah hingga tidak bisa dioperasikan. Meski sudah bisa beroperasi, untuk layanan instant messaging dan grup video calls masih belum bisa terhubung.

CEO Skype Tony Bates menolak mengomentari penyebab matinya layanan video chatting populer tersebut. Ia juga enggan menyebutkan asal muasal matinya server Skype, apakah dari dalam atau dari faktor eksternal.

Namun, dalam blog Skype, Bates menegaskan tidak ada serangan berbahaya yang menyebabkan Skype tidak bisa dioperasikan. "Kami bisa menangani penyebab permasalahan Skype tersebut dengan sangat baik," kata Bates dalam blog Skype.

Layanan Skype mati hampir di semua pengguna mulai Rabu, (22/12). Kemudian pada Kamis (23/12) sebanyak 21 juta pengguna Skype berhasil login. Jumlah tersebut sekitar 10% dari total pengguna yang biasa masuk ke Skype setiap harinya.

Perusahaan yang berbasis di Luxemburg itu menerangkan bahwa masalah yang sedang dialami beberapa versi Skype ini mengakibatkan banyak supernodes (komputer yang membantu pengguna menghubungkan telepon) mati. Itulah sebabnya layanan instant messaging dan panggilan video grup masih belum bisa bekerja.

Skype memberikan layanan gratis seperti video chatting, panggilan suara, ataupun mengirim pesan singkat ke sesama pengguna Skype. Sekitar 124 juta orang menggunakan Skype setiap bulannya.
