Of the many popular wayang (shadow theater) types in Bali, Wayang Wong is distinguished by its use of human actors wearing masks, rather than the puppets used in Wayang Kulit. The story line of the Wayang Wong is drawn mainly from the Ramayana, that great, monumental Hindu epic poem which describes the fight between Rama, King of Ayodya, and Rawana, King of Alengka. The epic poem has been preserved in Bali through a number of arts forms, including painting and sculpture, as well the performing arts such as the Kecak or "Monkey Dance," the Sendratari, a modern form of Balinese dance-drama, and the Wayang Kulit shadow play. The epic is still recited by mabasan clubs during temple celebrations, and copies of it are kept safe by scholars and priests.
