The RWC 304 is a 12-inch subwoofer that was delivered for testing in a sealed enclosure with an internal volume of about 1 cubic foot. Features include dual 4-ohm voice coils, a cast alloy basket, a polypropylene cone with rubber surround, an extended and vented pole piece, and large, gold-plated three-way binding posts.
Subjective
The RWC 304 performed quite well during the vast majority of our subjective evaluations. Its reproduction of practically any type of program material was accurate and uncolored. Even the stand-up bass tracks that I�m always complaining about came out sounding even and well defined, without that annoying one note emphasis. Upper octave transient response seems tight and while it�s not an overly loud sub, the RWC 304 is capable of reproducing rap and boom tracks at gut-wrenching levels as long as there�s power available.
The only shortcoming in performance appeared when I broke out the pipe organ CD. When driven hard at ultra-low frequencies, the RWC 304 seems to compress a bit. This dynamic compression is accompanied by a slight �chuffing� sound, so I suspect that the condition was caused more by a small leak in the enclosure than by a shortcoming in the woofer itself. Performance in the subsonic range depends heavily on an airtight enclosure. However, this is a problem that only the true geek is likely to encounter, because only true geeks listen to pipe organs. With practically any other type of music, there�s a lot less low frequency content and any �chuffing� noises that do occur are more likely to be masked by the music itself. So, if you�re a geek boy, get yourself a gasket when you get ready to install this otherwise very good sounding sub.
The connectors on the RWC 304 also deserve a little praise. We�ve all seen this type of heavy, multi-way connector on speakers, and I�ll be the first to admit that in many cases, they come off in a supremely cheesy manner. While the connectors accept huge wire, the tinsel leads are often hair-like, and the connectors are usually both incorrectly spaced for banana plugs and flimsily mounted. None of these descriptions apply to the RWC 304 though. The connectors are securely fastened to the cast frame and double bananas fit easily. Compared to the meager provisions found on most woofers, this is practically nirvana. Anyone that has ever installed a few speakers knows what I�m talking about. How many of those little fiberboard/spade lug thingies have you destroyed? Sucks almost as much as big globs of hot solder on the back of your new speaker cone, doesn�t it? I can think of at least three better ways to go about the process and the connectors on this woofer can handle them all.
Objective
All tests were performed with the RWC 304�s voice coils wired in series. Impedance measurements show a maximum of 184 ohms at 58 Hz and a minimum of 9 ohms at 20 Hz. Average impedance measured 30 ohms between 20 Hz and 100 Hz. Out-of-car measurement shows a very minimal rise in response below 100 Hz, followed by a 12 dB-per-octave roll-off below system resonance. In-car measurements at one watt show a sensitivity that averages 96.4 dB between 20 Hz and 50 Hz, and an overall response that fits within a window of about 4 dB. The 300-watt trace (top) shows a maximum of about 5 dB of power compression at the lowest frequencies and a maximum SPL of 122.4 dB at 54 Hz.
