Dekatnya jarak memungkinkan astronom bisa melihatnya dengan teleskop kecil sekalipun.

Sebuah asteroid baru saja terdeteksi sedang dalam perjalanan menuju ke Bumi. Untungnya, diperkirakan, pada titik terdekatnya yakni pada 27 Juni mendatang, asteroid berukuran sebesar rumah itu hanya akan melintas di dekat Bumi dengan jarak 17.700 kilometer.

Sebagai informasi, jarak 17.700 kilometer merupakan jarak yang sangat dekat, yakni 23 kali lipat lebih dekat dibanding jarak Bumi ke Bulan.

Dekatnya jarak dan besarnya asteroid yang diberi nama 2011 MD itu akan memungkinkan para pengamat langit yang menggunakan teleskop kecil sekalipun dapat melihatnya. Adapun titik terdekat asteroid dengan Bumi akan terjadi pada pukul 13:26 GMT atau sekitar 20:26 WIB.

Dikutip dari Universe Today, asteroid 2011 MD baru saja ditemukan pada 22 Juni kemarin oleh LINEAR, sepasang teleskop robotik yang ada di New Mexico, Amerika Serikat. Teleskop ini mampu memindai kawasan langit untuk menemukan asteroid yang berada di dekat Bumi.

Saat ini, asteroid 2011 MD diperkirakan memiliki ukuran lebar antara 9 sampai 45 meter. Menurut Emily Baldwin, astronom dari Astronomy Now, asteroid ini tidak membahayakan kehidupan di Bumi.

�Tidak ada potensi bahwa ia akan menghantam Bumi,� kata Baldwin. �Kalaupun ia masuk ke atmosfir, ia akan habis terbakar dan terpecah-pecah menjadi serpihan-serpihan kecil,� ucapnya.
