LONDON - Baru sebulan menyandang status sebagai istri, Gemma Redmond harus menjanda. Suaminya, Ian Redmond, tewas diserang ikan hiu di sebuah resort di Seychelles, tempat mereka berbulan madu. Kini, guru sekolah dasar berusia 27 tahun ini masih terpukul. Ian dan Gemma berpacaran selama sembilan tahun sebelum akhirnya memutuskan menikah bulan ini.
"Saya sangat mencintainya dan dia adalah seorang suami yang sangat khusus, seorang putra yang bijaksana, dan seorang saudara setia. Dia bekerja tanpa lelah untuk mewujudkan impiannya membentuk kehidupan rumah tangga yang indah," katanya.
Serangan hiu datang saat pasangan ini pada minggu kedua bulan madu mereka di Pulau Praslin memutuskan menikmati keindahan pantai Anse Lazio berdua. Suaminya berenang di pantai, dan Gemma sibuk merekamnya dengan kamera video. Perairan itu relatif dangkal, dan hanya 20 meter dari pantai. Ia baru saja duduk untuk berjemur ketika mendengar teriakan minta tolong suaminya.
Dalam waktu singkat ia telah kehilangan lengan dan menderita luka-luka mengerikan pada kaki kirinya, serta bekas gigitan pada tubuh dan pinggulnya.
Wisatawan lainnya berusaha keras untuk menyelamatkannya saat ia berbaring dalam kondisi mengalami perdarahan hebat. Namun nyawanya tak tertolong.
