illogical and unconventional approaches to Ch'an

The teaching of Ch'an ( ZEN ) as given to us by HUI NENG ( 638-713 ), the sixth Patriarch, are concerned with " Cien Sing ", which we may translate as " seeing one's true nature."
This approach to the problem of self-knowledge, could be called an intuitive one, and in that respect it differs basically from those of his predecessor.
HUI NENG once said to the monk MING, " Show me your original face , as it was before you were born."
This approach, as we shall see, was not an intellectual concepts. It is revealed, rather, through a direct intuition, a process which takes place instantaneously and of its own power. Our self-nature is to be apprehended in the midst of our daily activities. Realization is to return to our self-nature, to achieve Buddhahood.

Ma-tsu says :

" Cultivation is of no use for the attainment of Enlightenment. The only thing that one can do is to be free of defilement kotoran batin.
When one's mind is stained dinodai with thoughts of life and death pikiran duniawi , or deliberate action tindakan yg disengajakan , that is defilement. The grasping memegang of the Truth is the function of everyday-mindedness.
Everyday-mindedness is free from intentional action tindakan yg disengajakan , free from concepts right and wrong, taking and giving, the finite or the infinite............
All our daily activities_ walking, standing, sitting, lying down,_ all response to situations, our dealing with circumstances as they arise : all this....... is The way To Buddhahood. " semua kegiatan sehari2,mengerjakan sesuatu, berjalan, berdiri, duduk, dan rebah tiduran, semua ini adalah memberi reaksi dari keadaan2 yg timbul dari diri, dan memberi tanggapan atas suatu keadaan yg timbul dari luar, (dengan setepat tepatnya/ efisien) selain itu pikiran mustilah diam...semua ini adalah Jalan menuju Pencerahan

In this passage , Ma-Tsu attempts to lead his disciples beyond intellectual understanding, beyond the limitations of concentration and contemplation.
