Ban pesawat terbang dirancang secara khusus untuk mampu menahan beban yang berat, memberikan rasa nyaman pada penumpang, dan bertahan ketika pesawat bergerak di landasan dengan kecepatan yang cukup tinggi.


Sebenarnya, ukuran ban pesawat terbang hampir sama dengan ukuran ban mobil. Memang ukuran ini tampak kecil bila dibandingkan dengan ukuran pesawat. Mengapa dipilih ban kecil, sebab ban dengan ukuran yang terlalu besar menyulitkan ban tersebut menahan torsi berat pesawat.


Ban pesawat bukan ban yang padat. Di dalamnya ada gas/udara dengan tekanan yang cukup besar, sekitar enam kali lebih besar dari tekanan ban mobil penumpang. Tekanan sebesar ini dibutuhkan untuk menahan berat pesawat yang besar. Kelenturan atau deflection (perbedaan tinggi ban sebelum dan sesudah dipasang) ban pesawat sekitar 2 - 3 kali lebih besar dari ban mobil.



Kelenturan yang tinggi ini membuat penumpang pesawat lebih nyaman ketika pesawat hendak mendarat. Ban pesawat juga diharapkan mampu bertahan ketika pesawat bergerak dengan kecepatan sekitar 340 km/jam atau sekitar dua kali kecepatan maksimum mobil. Jadi, jangan lihat kecilnya, tapi lihat kemapuannya.
