Coretan makam di perkuburan Yahudi kuno berhasil diuraikan seorang ahli arkeologi. Isinya mengungkap pertalian keyakinan orang Yahudi dengan budaya Romawi.


Karen Stern adalah ahli arkeologi dan asisten profesor pada departemen sejarah di Brooklyn College yang berhasil menguraikan dan menginterpretasikan coretan makam di situs pemakaman Yahudi kuno yang berada di Beit She'arim, Israel.


Stern menemukan coretan grafiti berupa tulisan Yunani kuno di dalam Gua Peti Mati. Coretan tersebut berukuran amat kecil dan berada di dekat relung tempat lampu minyak. Salah satunya berbunyi, "Teguhkan hati, Orang Tua Suci dari Pharcitae, udes adonitas-tak ada yang hidup abadi". Menurut Stern, maksud coretan itu adalah untuk menenangkan orang mati yang sedang dibawa ke ruangan bawah tanah agar ia tidak merasa lemah hanya karena ia sudah meninggal.


Coretan lainnya berbunyi, "Semoga sukses dalam kebangkitan Anda". Selain itu, ada juga mantra-mantra magis dalam bahasa Yunani, kutukan dalam bahasa Aramaik yang isinya berupa ancaman nasib buruk yang akan menimpa siapa saja yang menjarah makam.


Gua Peti Mati merupakan kawasan pemakaman luas dengan beraneka ragam pusara. Sarkofagus sendiri bukan merupakan tradisi Yahudi, melainkan Romawi. Pada masa kejayaan Romawi, orang Yahudi percaya apabila mereka meniru orang Romawi, bicara seperti orang Romawi, dan berperilaku seperti orang Romawi, maka mereka akan memiliki kehidupan yang lebih baik.
