By dedicating a 5.28-square-kilometer area at the core of the city to exhibitions, events and forums on the Expo theme, "Better City, Better Life," Shanghai hopes to build a powerful and lasting pilot example of sustainable and harmonious urban living. The traditional Chinese wooden structure element, Dougong brackets, is introduced. Its main colour is "Gugong (Forbidden City) Red" which represents the taste and spirit of Chinese culture. Spoiler for MeteoWorld Pavilion: ![]() ![]() The meteorological pavilion, will cover 2,000 square meters and will look like a huge white cloud with mist surrounding it. Visitors will be able to see a rainbow when the angle of the sunshine is below 42 degrees. The theme is "For Safety and Interest." The pavilion will simulate climatic cataclysms. Another highlight of the pavilion will be Nepal's efforts in environmental protection and developing renewable energies. The pavilion is in the form of an ancient Buddhist temple in Kathmandu, surrounded by traditional Nepalese houses. Spoiler for Iceland Pavilion: ![]() ![]() The Shanghai Expo organizer yesterday handed over a 500-square-meter pavilion space to Iceland, which the country will decorate into an "Ice Cube," similar to China's National Aquatics Center, or Water Cube. Spoiler for Saudi pavilion: ![]() ![]() The pavilion is a combined effort of Chinese and Saudi designers. The pavilion has a "moon boat" shape and is surrounded by deserts and seas, just like Saudi Arabia. The first floor of the pavilion is a garden with both Chinese and Saudi trees growing, a symbol of the friendship between the two nations. The pavilion's main attraction will be a huge cinema screen. The 1,600 square-meter screen will be larger than any other cinema screen on earth. Spoiler for Turkey Pavilion: ![]() ![]() The Turkey Pavilion unveiled its design yesterday and its theme "The Cradle of Civilization" was inspired by one of the first known settlements in the world, said Sencar Ozsoy, commissioner general of Turkey. The main inspiration for the exterior of the 2,000-square-meter rented pavilion was also derived from settlements called "Catalhoyuk" in Turkish, which were the center of advanced culture in the Neolithic period. The kites will be about 8 meters long and 4 meters wide, larger than normal kites, and supported by poles each 3 meters to 13 meters tall.
