lens for modeling/portraits

concerned about distortion that I may not be aware of while shooting, wondering which lens is best (other than trial and error I need to go through).

I have a sigma 18-250 F3.5-6.3 which I think gives me very nice sharp shots, but obvious distortion at the low end, aperture isn't an issue as I have plenty of light.

also still have the 18-55 kit lens that came with the Canon XS (I don't ever use it as I leave the Sigma on full time for convenience).

wondering if a fixed lens like a 50 f/1.8 (about $99) would make a better studio/modeling lens?
