Ada Ribuan Jenis Bakteri Hidup di Pusar

Ilmuwan menemukan 1.400 bakteri yang berbeda di pusar manusia. Sebanyak 662 di antaranya adalah spesies baru. Temuan oleh proyek Belly Button Biodiversity ini menjelaskan bahwa pusar merupakan lingkungan yang menarik bagi bakteri.


Proyek yang dilakukan oleh North Carolina University di Raleigh, Amerika Serikat, ini mengambil sampel dari para relawan. Proyek ini bertujuan membuat orang tertarik dalam bidang mikrobiologi dan mengurangi kekhawatiran terhadap mikroba penyebab penyakit. Penelitian yang dipimpin Rob Dunn dan Jiri Hulcr ini ternyata mengungkap data baru mengenai mikroorganisme yang hidup tubuh manusia.


"Beberapa spesies yang ditemukan ternyata pernah ditemukan di laut," tulis Carl Zimmer, penulis ilmiah yang turut menyumbangkan sampel dari pusarnya, di blog. Pada sampel yang diambil dari pusarnya, juga ditemukan spesies Georgenia, spesies yang selama ini hanya ditemukan di Jepang. Zimmer mengaku belum pernah ke sana.


Meskipun jenis mikroba baru yang ditemukan cukup banyak, kuantitasnya hanya sedikit. "Sebanyak 40 spesies setara dengan 80 persen populasi bakteri di pusar," tulis Peter Aldhous, juga seorang penulis ilmiah yang menyumbangkan sampel.
