Like the FE771SB, the Samsung SyncMaster 765mb is a 17-inch flat-screen CRT with a high-brightness feature. The monitor costs just slightly more ($220 street), but it offers more in the bargain.



Samsung calls its brighter modes MagicBright and offers three settings: Text, for typical office chores; Internet, for Web surfing; and�brightest of all�Entertainment, for those notoriously dark games and DVD movies. Even more important, you can define a rectangular area on the screen in which to apply the higher brightness. You can open a Highlight Zone, or window, on-screen and show a movie or TV image in Entertainment mode, while leaving the rest of the screen in the standard-brightness Text mode.



Installation and setup is easy. The front-panel controls are easy to identify, though the on-screen configuration menus can be a little confusing to navigate in places.



In terms of image quality, the Samsung 765mb has a slight advantage over the NEC-Mitsubishi monitor. The Displaymate screens revealed near-perfect convergence on the DynaFlat ShadowMask tube (which boasts a 0.20-mm horizontal dot pitch). The finer phosphors also support higher-resolution images; the company recommends 1,280-by-1,024 (SXGA) for the monitor.



Screen geometry is good, and though some images had noticeable moir� patterns, the on-screen controls made reducing them easy. Image size and black-level regulation was very good. The only drawbacks were weak performance at the darkest and lightest gray shades and a slight olive tint to midrange grays. The highest brightness setting resulted in a little blooming, but not nearly as much as in the FE771SB.



Given its better image quality, finer phosphors, and user-definable high-brightness area, the tiny price increase for the Samsung SyncMaster 765mb over the NEC MultiSync FE771SB is more than justified. If you think you'd prefer having a brighter image for part or all of your screen, this is clearly the better choice.
