Please help me!!! About my d40!!!

good day and obviously im new in photography.

i am a fan and i wanna try it out myself.

 

i have a d40 and using a kit lens of 18-55mm lens.

 

now my problem is this:

I am trying a portrait photography using my white painted wall and a flourescent white spot lamp... i am using the manual mode but it doesnt seem to adjust to the light.

 

is the light poor or is the light too white???

i have tried setting up the ISO, apperture, shutterspeed, exp compensation and flash but the clicker wont allow me to click the shutter.

i just press it and nothing happens, only the screen goes off.

 

can you guess what the problem is???
