Jaring laba-laba berumur 140 juta tahun ditemukan di dalam sebuah batu amber di Sussex, Inggris, oleh tim peneliti Universitas Oxford, baru-baru ini. Selain jaring laba-laba, para ilmuwan juga menemukan beberapa materi tumbuhan, kotoran serangga, dan mikroba kuno di tempat itu. �Jaring ini menjadi jaring tertua dalam catatan penemuan fosil selama ini,� ucap Martin Brasier, kepala tim peneliti Universitas Oxford kepada tim Livescience.

Brasier dan sejumlah rekannya menggunakan teknik komputer bernama confocal microscopy untuk merekonstruksi jaring dan memeriksa struktur anyamannya. Dari beberapa petunjuk yang ditemukan, para peneliti menduga, jaring laba-laba mengkilat itu dihasilkan oleh laba-laba yang memiliki hubungan dekat dengan laba-laba modern.





�Jika dilihat dari bentuk jaringnya, saya menduga makanan laba-laba ini adalah serangga terbang, seperti lalat dan nenek moyang lebah, tawon, juga ngengat,� tutur Brasier.

Pada 2006, para ilmuwan melaporkan telah menemukan jaring laba-laba kuno dalam sebuah batu amber yang diperkirakan berumur 136 juta tahun. Penemuan jaring laba-laba terbaru ini akan dipublikasikan dalam jurnal Geological Society edisi mendatang.
